When four classically trained musicians explore their passion for tango, the result is nothing short of delightful. Quartango takes tango in new directions, with impeccable arrangements, unexpected allusions to classical music and a dose of humor, woven together by the elegant interplay of ensemble playing at its best. The chemistry between the musicians and their engaging rapport with the audience create a memorable experience that always brings down the house.

Quartango is René Gosselin, double bass and artistic direction, Jonathan Goldman, bandoneon, Stéphane Aubin, piano, and Antoine Bareil, violin. Together, they offer up a repertoire ranging from the classic tangos to tango nuevo and Piazzolla. They also explore other genres, from jazz and opera to waltzes and jigs, in their own inimitable style. Quartango has charmed audiences across Canada and the United States, and in Tokyo, Taipei, Paris and São Paulo. They stole the show at Carnegie Hall, in performance with the New York Pops, and have also appeared with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Montreal’s Orchestre Métropolitain. In 2008, Quartango performed four outdoor concerts with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, attracting a total of more than 40,000 spectators.

The Golden Era

With The Golden Era, Quartango transports us to the ebullient and unbridled universe of the cabarets and nightlife that made Montreal the "Paris of North America"! Evoking the searing atmosphere of the Faisan Doré, the Boîte à Clairette, Casa Loma or Café St-Michel, this new production offers a series of artistic nods to the hits of the major entertainers of the period, including French chanson greats Charles Aznavour and Édith Piaf, the cabaret performances of Alys Roby, and jazz legends Oscar Peterson and Charles Biddle. Armed with the formidable compositional chops that earned them a Juno award and an Opus Prize in 2015, Quartango invites us to a glimmering tour through the années folles in which music, folly and joie de vivre are transported into the present.

Body and Soul
Quartango and dancers

A treat for both the eyes and the ears! When Quartango teams up with Argentine tango dancers Roxana and Fabian, audiences are spellbound by the intricate, sensual dance steps and the spirited music. Tangos that draw on classical works, jazz standards, Celtic melodies and popular tunes provide the setting for Roxana and Fabian’s terpsichorean pyrotechnics. Dancers and musicians share their passion for the tango in an exceptional performance where melody and movement are in perfect harmony.

A Symphony of Tango
Quartango and symphony orchestra

Quartango’s four classically trained instrumentalists go back to their roots, suffusing their repertoire with the sounds of the strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion that make up the symphony orchestra. The remarkable quality of the orchestral arrangements adds a whole new dimension to the group’s inimitable style. Critics  and  audiences  alike  have  praised  Quartango’s  concerts  with  the  Orchestre symphonique  de Montréal (4 concerts, Summer 2003), Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Orchestre Métropolitain, Regina Symphony Orchestra and the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. When Quartango performs against the lush backdrop of a symphony orchestra, the excitement and intensity of the tango reach new heights!

Quartango’s musicians combine their musical flights of fancy with the talents of classical singers to enrich their already varied repertoire. From Bizet to Piazzolla, Quartango revisits well-known tango songs and beloved arias and gives them its own special trademark. Audiences are enthralled by the exquisite voices, impressed by the elegant, impassioned playing and thrilled by the unusual pairing of great opera classics with tango’s spellbinding rhythms.
